Shopping during quarantine

When we find ourselves in an alert situation like the one we are currently experiencing due to Covid-19, the easiest thing to do is to make compulsive purchases, without controlling the amount of food that is necessary to have, without looking at expiration dates and even , without bothering to know if they are perishable foods or not.

For this reason, our nutritionist Irene del Río-Hortega gives you a series of tips when shopping and proposes you to buy food whose useful life is longer. It is important to know that we should always prioritize fresh food, but in emergency situations, it is better to replace this type of food with the ones shown below.

Nonperishable food:

  • Dry goods: legumes, legume flour pasta, nuts, seeds, dried or freeze-dried fruits and vegetables, wholemeal flour, pasta, rice, noodles, couscous, quinoa, oat flakes, etc.
  • Packaged or canned foods: vegetables, legumes, canned fish and shellfish naturally or in good quality oils, milk, vegetable drinks, gazpacho or salmorejo. Olive oil, vinegar, salt, etc..
  • Frozen food: vegetables, legumes, stir-fried vegetables, fish, shellfish, meat. Avoid fish fingers, breaded fillets, croquettes, etc.
  • Foods that can be frozen: bread, meat, fish and shellfish. Remember: Some vegetables, previously blanched, can also be frozen.
  • Perishable foods that can only be kept refrigerated (some fresh fruits, eggs, yogurt or kefir, butter, cheese, cottage cheese) and perishables that are kept at room temperature (fresh fruits like bananas and citrus).

Excessive purchases are not sustainable, supportive or ethical at this time.
